Located in the municipality of Castril and very close to the town. Built in 1999. A dam of loose materials with a clay core, with a height of 83 m and a crest length of 327 m, it floods 142.5 ha and has a maximum reservoir capacity of 33.5 hm3, regulating the catchment area of the Sierra de Castril Natural Park.
The dam has no fish passages, and there are plans to install a hydroelectric power station at the foot of the dam with a capacity of 1.8 MW, one of the last reservoirs to be built in the province of Granada. It is supplied by the river Castril, with a flow of more than 2,000 litres per second at its sources. For those of us who have known this river and its beautiful course through its mountains - today a Natural Park - we cannot fail to mention that in return for this important infrastructure, we have ceased to enjoy its passage through this unique natural landscape.
