Las Lagartosas
We are a livestock farming business and Las Lagartosas is the name of our farm, which has been in our family for several generations.
Las Lagartosas is mainly dedicated to rearing two indigenous breeds. These are Retinta cattle and the Iberian pig or, as more commonly referred to, Pata Negra (black-foot).
Las Lagartosas is located in La Dehesa de los Pedroches, and more precisely in the countryside surrounding the town of Villanueva de Córdoba, often shortened to simply Villanueva. Villanueva de Córdoba’s location is in the north of the province of Córdoba, southern Spain.
La Dehesa is a unique ecosystem comprising of an oak forest which is found in the west and south-west area of the Iberian Península. La Dehesa is home to its characteristic vegetation and is also the habitat for its unique species.
In particular, La Dehesa de los Pedroches in one of the largest and more beautiful oak forests found in the world.
Pata Negra pigs and La Dehesa de los Pedroches belong inextricably with each other. World experts, agree that some of the best cured acorn-fed ham comes from this area. One main reason is the particularly sweet and tasty acorns produced by its oaks.
