Biographie

Joaquín Cortés was born in Córdoba in 1969 in a gypsy family, but moved to Madrid when very small. At the age of twelve he began his studies of dance and entered into Spain´s National Ballet three years later, and stayed there until he managed to become a solo artist. It was then, that he travelled all over the world and entered into contact, as soon as he had left the ballet, with maestro´s such as Maya Plisetskaya, Silvie Guillem, Peter Schauffuss. In 1992 he created his own dance company, whose first show was Cibayí. He caught Pedro Almodóvar´s eye, who wanted him for his film La flor de mi secreto and later on he danced 'farrucas´ bare chest in Carlos Saura´s film Flamenco, starting an aesthetic style which has as many followers as detractors. In 1995 he premiered Pasión gitana, with costume by Giorgio Armani, a show which more than a million people have watched. He inaugurated the World Athletics Championship in Sevilla and was the protagonist of the film Gitano, after which he has created shows for the masses such as Soul. He is the dancer with most international fame of the moment.
