Pinar de Cánava

The Cánava Pine Wood is an interesting forest ecosystem, mainly comprising Aleppo pines. The unique nature of this pine wood, with some 120 trees, lies in its unspoilt nature and in its age, with pine trees between 100 and 250 years old.

This pine wood is valuable as an educational resource, a unique chance to see the different phases of development of a wood. You can also see what pine trees look like as they get old. As opposed to the typical shape of young pine trees with straight trunks and conical canopies, the twisted trees of this Natural Monument stand out. Their rounded, umbrella-shaped canopies are reminiscent of other kinds of tree. The scrub in this forest has all but disappeared. All woods usually have this naturally, but mankind's intervention has modified the process, leading towards greater simplicity.

This Natural Monument is set in a peaceful location up high, and from here there are beautiful views of the Sierra Mágina Mountains and nearby villages.
