Olivo de Las Lomas
Olivo de las Lomas stands out due to the spectacular form its olive trees present, with their bases twisted like a screw, leaning to the east 1.2 metres. All their branches grow in this direction, which gives each tree a majestic appearance, similar to a flag.
The foliage at the top is abundant while the dimension of each trunk is notable, exceeding 4.5 metres. To obtain these measurements, these trees have been growing for over 250 years.
Las Lomas is in the Zurgena area and it constitutes a vast plain dotted by the odd, small hill that breaks the monotony of the plain. Although it is surrounded by the Rambla de Los Puntales, due to the intense, low water level the land suffers it is dry and earthy in texture. The olive grove is set in a farm of almond trees on a soil plinth, with some fig trees, century plants and patches of caper bushes defining the border between plots and ruts.
Located in lower Almanzora, near eastern Almeria's beaches, the presence of up to four sections of the Vía Verde del Almanzora, which is a railway line adapted for recreational activities, is an interesting feature. This unique botanical example forms part of an outstanding series of unusual trees that are dotted around the Almanzora Valley and its slopes: azarole at Acerolo Cortijo de las Iglesias, terebinth at the Cornicabra del Puente de El Valle, holm oaks at Encina de El Marchal de El Abogado, poplar at Chopo El Marchal de El Abogado, holly oaks at Encina de la Fuente el Pino, holly oaks at Encina de los Trébedes and olive trees at Olivo de las Lomas.
