Parroquia de San Andrés
The Parish Church of San Andrés is the largest church in the town of Villanueva del Arzobispo. It was built over the foundations of an old medieval fortress and is located in the heart of what today is called the old quarter of the Town. The exterior has a certain military air, halfway between defensive and religious architecture.
There is evidence of a first parish church dedicated to San Andrés in 1488, the year when Fray Domingo de Baltanás y Mexía was baptised. Later, construction of the current church was begun in the first third of the 17th century, according to a receipt dated in 1662 in which the master builder Juan Alonso Bex and the bishop's official inspector Juan Alférez Cuadros awarded a thousand ducats for work to be continued.
A main doorway was opened on the South façade of the parish church of San Andrés. The interior, with a number of chapels where religious images of great artistic value are venerated, there is a Christian cross floor plan with a very undeveloped crossing. It is covered by a barrel vault with lunettes where windows are carved in.
En 1927, due to the collapse of the original, the great dome was decorated in segments with motifs of "candelieri", cherubs, etc., by the architect from Alcala, Manuel López and plasterers from Granada.
