Villanueva de los Castillejos
Village situated in Tierra Llana, to the south of the Andevalo region, on a plain with pines and eucalyptus trees.
The only monument of interest is the Parish Church.
History
During Roman times it was a place for rest and to take on supplies for the legions who disembarked in Ayamonte en route to Betica and Merida. In the surrounding area small fortresses were built giving the village the name it has today.
Its foundation dates from the XV century. The Dukes of Bejar conquered it and took it from the Moslems. Later on it passed into the hands of the Marquis of Gibraleon.
During the reign of Felipe IV, in the year 1631, it received the title of "Villa".
During the war of Independence, its participation in the battle against the French in 1811 was significant. In honour of this victory a Mass for Peace is held every year.
