Mirador y Ermita del Espíritu Santo - Ciudad de Bayra
In the surroundings of Vera you'll find the Lookout Point and the Chapel of the Espíritu Santo located on the site of the former Hispanic-Moorish city of Bayra, founded by the Arabs and reconquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1488. It was destroyed by a strong earthquake on 9 November 1518.
At the summit, a genuine lookout point with stunning panoramic views of the coast and the interior of the valley, you'll find the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, erected in 1949. Highlights include the remains of the castle and the city walls built by the Moors on the foundations of old buildings dating from the Bronze Age to Roman times.
A cistern, transformed into a shrine during the Modern Age (15th century), has been converted into the Visitor Centre for the Medieval City of Bayra, with displays of all the archaeology and documentary history of this archaeological site, complemented by an open air visit of the remains of the medieval city of Bayra with information panels all along the route.
The ruins of the Lookout Point and the Chapel of the Espíritu Santo were recently declared by the Regional Government of Andalusia as an Archaeological Area of Cultural Interest (BIC), in 2004.
Free entrance.
It is opened every day. For more information, contact with Vera town hall.
