Centro de Interpretación Paleontológica - Museo de los Fósiles Marinos
Situated in Vera, the most important items in the Palaeontological Interpretation Centre - Marine Fossil Museum, a pioneering museum in the province of Almería, are the remains of a whale (fossil fragments of ribs and vertebrae) found in Monte Hacho de Vera – the mark of an old underwater fossil dune. It belonged to a species that is the ancestor of the Balaenoptera (finback whale), the largest known animal that has ever existed on Earth. Although it was as large as some dinosaurs, it was much heavier.
The exhibition also features over one hundred different fossils, ranging from huge oysters (Crassostrea) and echinoderms (Clypeaster), to minute bryozoa (Retepora). There are also ammonites and trilobites. In order to understand the display there are many posters and audiovisual presentations explaining the characteristics of the different plants and animals groups, as well as the process of evolution of life on Earth.
Monday to Friday: 10am to 2pm and 5 to 8pm.
