Alto de La Pandera
The former military base of La Pandera is the highest point in the Starlight Reserve in the Sierra Sur of Jaén and an excellent spot for observing the sky. At the top is a large esplanade where fans of astronomy have been gathering in the hundreds for many years.
The northern horizon impossible to view due to the nearby city of Jaén; however, looking towards the east and south the sights are spectacular. This place highly recommended to the more expert amateurs who not only seek good darkness but also good observation points. As the place is over 1800 metres high, the atmosphere is really clear and one of the best places for observing and photographing the skies.
To get there, take the turn-off on the road connecting Los Villares and Valdepeñas de Jaén and go up to the heliport at the top.
Note: on some days there is a laminar air flow, in which case it is better to observe from the esplanade next to the buildings instead of the heliport.
