Iglesia del Convento de la Purísima Concepción
The Convento de la Concepción de Carmelitas Calzadas, located opposite the Church of Santiago el Mayor in the monumental centre of Utrera, was founded in 1577 by Don Francisco Álvarez de Bohórquez and his wife Doña Catalina de Coria. The first profession took place the following year, at the opening of the convent in 1580.
The church is Mudéjar, with a single nave, covered by handmade coffering with Mudéjar tracery over its full length, right into the presbytery. At the foot of the nave there a raised choir closed in by this coffering, whilst the lower, rectangular choir is covered by a barrel vault with lunettes and rib arches with plasterwork, all this from the 17th century. Behind the Main Altarpiece is the sacristy and over this the dwelling of the sacristan covered by a flat roof.
The two exterior doorways, with semicircular arches, pilasters, triangular pediment and pyramid finishes, have been restored, but the composition corresponds to that of the original period. At the foot of the nave there is a brick belfry. These doorways would have been built in the 19th century, while the rest of the church corresponds to the last quarter of the 16th century.
