Iglesia de Santiago el Mayor de Utrera
The Parish Church of Santiago el Mayor was built very close to the Castle and fortress of the city of Utrera. It has spacious proportions and the different architectural styles through the passage of time can be appreciated. It has been declared to be of Cultural Interest since 1977, under the category of monuments.
The church which remains today is in Gothic style dating from the 15th century, it is a hall church with three naves of equal height. The arches are all pointed and the columns have shafts composed of beams and veins very similar to those of Seville Cathedral. At the foot of the church you can find Renaissance features and the Main Gate or "Puerta del Perdón" is in an interesting Isabelline Gothic style dating from about 1525. A robust three-centred arch supports the tower, while the whole façade features various Mudéjar elements. The sanctuary, transept and sacristy are by Lorenzo de Aredo, 1596.
The lateral doorways have neo-classical lines attributed to José Echamorro. The domes of the chapels of Santo Cristo, San José, del Rosario, San Antonio and Bautismal give it a peculiar appearance, with interesting tiling on the exterior of the church.
