Church of San Miguel
The Church of San Miguel, located in the World Heritage City of Úbeda, in the province of Jaén, is a Neo-Renaissance church consisting of three naves with a crossing, covered by barrel vaults and a semi-circular dome with a prominent roof lantern at the crossing. The beautiful exterior features bichromatic tiling. As the church was severely damaged in 1936 it was substantially restored, with the addition of a niche on the main façade containing a three-metre stone sculpture representing San Miguel Arcángel that was created in 1971 by the renowned artist from Úbeda, Marcelo Góngora.
The temple was refurbished again in 2002 with the help of the Carmelite Community and the Cristo de la Buena Muerte and Virgen del Carmen Brotherhoods.
The interior was restored with paintings in the niche and main chapel that represent the conquest of Úbeda by San Fernando, aided by San Miguel in the front and scenes from the life of San Juan de la Cruz and Santa Teresa de Jesús on both sides, the work of Antonio Maldonado.
