Church of San Lorenzo
The Church of San Lorenzo is a parish church adjoining the Moorish walls on the south side, in the city of Úbeda, a World Heritage Site since 2003 and located in the province of Jaén.
The archaeological studies made by the Huerta de San Antonio Foundation have enable the building to be dated to the 13th century. San Lorenzo was built shortly after the Christians conquered the city in 1234. In the early years it had the appearance of a humble Romanesque temple. Some structural features of great simplicity and beauty remain from this period.
In the following 14th and 15th centuries San Lorenzo took on the appearance of a Gothic temple. The chapels were adorned with pointed arches and the roof was covered with a beautiful Mudéjar coffered ceiling that is no longer there.
However, its greatest period of splendour was during the Renaissance. However, it would continue to undergo restructuring, always in accordance with the prevailing artistic cannons. So in the 18th century the main altar was covered with a great Baroque dome. Meanwhile, the central nave was covered with a false plaster dome.
Family environment of the writer Antonio Muñoz Molina, described in his novel "The Polish Horseman".
