Bosque de la Bañizuela
The Natural Monument of the Bañizuela Forest, its uniqueness, social merit, recognition and clear interest comes from its biological features, being a small, Mediterranean island forest, despite being in a dry climate, with a large number of uniquely beautiful species. It has up to 22 species of trees and 15 unique types of subhumid mushroom, with an ancient garden with very old botancial examples.
Surrounded by olive groves, it is characterised by the presence of gall-oak and an undergrowth consisting of laurustinus, adelfilla, kermes oaks, yellow jasmine, honeysuckle, and the interesting leguminous, bladder senna. In the lower parts of the Countryside of Jaén, in areas not covered by olive tree groves, you can find isolated vegetation, especially in the peaks of the small hills, where the remains of holm oaks mix with the broom and thyme.
There are some myrtle bushes, although this one we found in the Bañizuela Forest really stands out due its size and thickness of the stalk, which is more typical of a tree than a bush.
Situated near the town of Torredelcampo, to the west of Jaén, there are some small gallery forests, such as the Barranco del Megatín ravine, where poplars can be seen.
