The poet´s sunset route
Do you know where Rafael Alberti, Luis Cernuda, Juan Ramón Jiménez and other poets were inspired? By the sunsets on the beaches of Isla Cristina. Be inspired and immerse yourself in the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic on the Costa de la Luz.
A bathroom to cool your ideas, before you become inspired.
While waiting for the famous sunsets of Isla Cristina, what better way to spend time than splashing around along its twelve kilometres of shoreline. Carry on reading to discover the best beaches in the area.
If you want to stay near the town, you will find the Central beach at the end of the town centre. This is a great place for swimming, surrounded by the best facilities: hotels, bars, restaurants, terraces, etc. And just in front is the promenade to take a relaxing stroll. Next to it is a pedestrian path that continues along the coastline park, a huge line of dunes and pine that covers the Isla Cristina coastline.
Further along you can go for a swim in the Playa de Hoyo. Being further away from town, there are less swimmers. The pine forest has a picnic area, and you can start to appreciate the dune system along this coastline.
Following the coast, you will reach Casita Azul Beach. This area is named after the Nature Centre. The beach is very similar to the Hoya, but even more peaceful. Perfect for a family day out looking for shells, which is a popular activity in this area.
Next, you will come across the Redondela Beach. A small shrine in the middle of the pine forest is the emblem of this area. The Virgen de la Esperanza pilgrimage is celebrated here.
Enjoy the same sunset that the great Spanish poets saw.
At dusk, it is advisable to go back to the city. That's where the Ruta de los Atardeceres (the Sunset Route) begins. The route visits the most charismatic places on Isla Cristina, accompanied by the sunset. These places inspired characters such as Rafael Alberti, Luis Cernuda and Juan Ramón Jiménez.
Watching the sunset is not the only attraction. The streets near the beach are covered by tiles with verses from poets from the island. Discover them all!
Now that the light starts to get interesting, you have several options. First, go back to the Central Beach promenade. If you prefer to change place, go to the Isla Gaviota Beach, walking along the long wooden bridge that crosses the Carreras estuary marsh. Here, the sunset has some beautiful violet and orange tones.
Another option is to explore the Avenida Atlántico to the Punta del Cayman, where you can enjoy a fantastic sunset that turns the water with incredible colours.
Near the city centre, there are two areas to enjoy the sunset: the Martínez Catena Wharf, with the boats that give a charming and postcard-like touch to the Salinas.
