The Malaga goat

cabra malagueña

The Casa de la Cabra Malagueña, in Casabermeja, is the ideal place to get to know an autochthonous breed that has one of the highest milk productions in the world. Very abundant in the beautiful region of Axarquia, where numerous herds graze, this centre offers guided agrotourism tours that allow travellers to see how the cheese is made, or even how this animal grazes.

Every female of the Malaga Goat, a native Spanish breed, produces an average of 550 liters of milk per year. Therefore, it has a lot to boast about, as it is one of the most valued for both its quantity and the quality of its product. It also generates a good meat production, especially the suckling kid. And every year the Goat Festival, also in Casabermeja, becomes a fun and cultural event to learn about this breed and its produce. There are three main products that give value to this goat: milk, cheese, and meat. In this sense, it has the 'native breed' guarantee, and the meat also has the Chivo Lechal Malagueño brand.

The total census of Malaga goats is approximately 300,000 heads. Their greatest population is in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, especially in the province of Malaga, although there is also a presence in the rest of the Andalusian territory, throughout Extremadura, in Portugal and the north of Morocco.

This is guaranteed success, which is completed with a very entertaining rural tourism offer organized by the Malaga Goat Breeders Association. The neuralgic point is in Casabermeja, home to the Malaga Goat House Interpretation Center . It is a space in which all kinds of activities are organised, especially suitable for the whole family, from cheese-making workshops to grazing in the fields, with other entertaining experiences such as country tasting/pairing of cheeses and wine or routes of flora, fauna and rural history.

The town also celebrates the Malaga Goat Festival, a gastronomic event that has activities for all ages. In November, bars and restaurants offer dishes made with products from this breed, but also workshops, guided tours, markets, exhibitions, children's games... An unimaginable world around one of the most authentic Andalusian goat breeds.
