The Aljarafe, living craftsmanship

ISESA principal

Different civilisations have left their mark quite naturally on the region of Aljarafe since even before the Phoenicians. There are olive trees and vineyards throughout a cultural landscape which includes a wide variety of craftworkers. The pilgrimages and festivals require traditional shawls and hats, and you will still find looms where carpets are weaved by hand and then there are the olive oil cakes, which have conquered an international market. And, of course there is must, a young wine that has become a true classic.

Just one look at the authenticity of the landscape in this region, close to the city of Seville, helps you understand how it treasures so much history and skilled craftsmanship. The Tartessian treasure of Carambolo appeared on one of the hillsides and, thousands of years later, arts and crafts continue to emerge as if deposited by tradition.

You can sit down at a table or look for a chat at the bar in one of the taverns whilst enjoying the unique wines of Aljarafe and its famous olives. The red and white wines here give way to the humbler, but also much more renowned nectar: must. When the first juice of the grape is drunk, when the winter cold still prevails, what you enjoy todays belongs to an ancient culture.

The Aljarafe olives are just as good, and enjoy a reputation for being of fine quality. The same happens when they are converted into extra virgin olive oil, a delight for those looking for artisan eating and drinking.

One of the best known handicrafts in Aljarafa can also be eaten: This is the olive oil Cake. A unique dessert made by women who have created very contemporary varieties, helping it gain in both markets and modernity.

The textile craft includes a great variety of skills and products: Flamenco costumes, embroidery and lace, religious embroidery using gold and silver thread, on Damask, silk, velvet and lamé, Manila shawls embroidered in chinoiserie-style motifs.

And of course there is clay. Here they are renowned for tile work, traditional artistic ceramics, the reproduction of old ceramics, traditional pottery and new creative ceramics. Decorative items such as wall- and floor-tiles; and functional objects such as plant pots, bowls and vases.
