IE-028 Costa de Trafalgar: Guadalmesí - Tarifa
The route of the IE-028 Costa de Trafalgar: Guadalmesí – Tarifa runs entirely through the natural park Del Estrecho, offering spectacular views of Africa and the Strait of Gibraltar, where the stunning geological formations of the coastal cliffs are worthy of note.
The ancient city of Tarifa, with its beaches and gastronomy; wind–the main player in water sports such as surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing; and its strategic location, which makes it an exceptional place for birdwatching and sighting cetaceans, are just some examples of the touristic riches of the area that the route runs through.
Route
You have to take the N-340 from Tarifa towards Algeciras and, at kilometre 96, turn onto an earth track. After passing the Huerta Grande visitor centre, follow the signs for the Cerro del Tambor path until you come to a group of wind turbines. Continue along the main track. which descends to the rural neighbourhood of Guadalmesí, where the equestrian route begins.
Soon, you reach the beach, cross the mouth of the Guadalmesí river and climb to the defensive tower with the same name, where there is also a bird observatory. The route, which follows the Colada de la Costa y del Camino de Algeciras livestock route, continues between coastal meadows and areas of low scrub, crossing several streams and rivers which flow into the Mediterranean.
The lighthouse at Punta de Tarifa welcomes you to the city of Tarifa, where the last foothills of the mountains of the Iberian Peninsula submerge into the sea.
