Sustainable Tourism
There are many similar terms that can cause confusion: Eco-tourism, Agro-tourism, Responsible Tourism…
According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO):
The development of sustainable tourism responds to the present needs of tourists and host regions, while at the same time protecting and improving future opportunities. It focuses on managing resources in a way that satisfies economic, social and aesthetic needs, and at the same time respects cultural integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity and life support systems.
In this way, any kind of tourism activity (rural, sporting, cultural, etc.) that involves the conservation of resources and biodiversity, preoccupation with environmental impact and distribution of profits throughout the local community, falls within the category of Sustainable Tourism.
