Santo Ángel Convent Church was founded by San Juan de la Cruz in 1587. The temple was built at the beginning of the 17th century, between 1603 and 1608, following plans by Alonso de Vandelvira, with master builder Juan de Segarra and architect Pedro Sánchez Falconete taking part in the construction. It was blessed in 1608 by the Cardinal of Seville, Don Fernando Niño de Guevara, always belonging to the religious order of the Carmelites

The interior is made up of three naves with short transept wings. The central nave has a barrel vault, and the side ones have a groin vaults and are decorated with plasterwork. In the centre of the transept a large hemispherical vault rises up, the centre of which is decorated with a large rosette. Numerous decorative details on the vaults tell us that Vandelvira was directly involved in the design.

The main altarpiece is a neoclassical work blessed in 1862. In its central part there is a large lady chapel that houses a statue of the Virgen del Carmen with baby Jesus, by Cristóbal Ramos around 1770. The people are so devoted to her that she was canonically crowned on 10 October 2015.

It is also worth admiring the Chapel of El Sagrario. This chapel was built by Aníbal Gonzalez in the early 20th century.

It contains works by Francisco Antonio Gijón, Blas Molner, Pedro Duque Cornejo, Pedro Roláan, Benito de Hita y Castillo and Juan de Astorga. But the most outstanding image in the Church of Santo Ángel is without a doubt the magnificent Cristo de los Desamparados, by Juan Martínez Montañés, datable to 1617.

The Convent Church of Santo Ángel can be visited and is an interesting sacred art museum.
