Sanctuary of Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Salud and María Santísima de las Angustias Coronada "Los Gitanos"
Located in Seville, the Church of Cristo de los Gitanos, whose real name is Sanctuary of Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Salud and María Santísima de las Angustias Coronada "Los Gitanos", dates back to the early 15th century. It was part of the Franciscan convent of El Valle, which had the church, rooms, cloisters, gardens and a vegetable garden.
A number of expropriations during the 19th century transformed the convent into a school, which had been totally abandoned by the second half of the 20th century and subsequently demolished. Only the church was spared, and in spite of the cultural damage suffered, it brought to light an Almohad wall section with three towers that made up the interior of the convent. In 1996 it was transferred to the Hermandad de los Gitanos (Gypsy Fraternity) who were committed to its restoration which saw the active financial participation of Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart, Duchess of Alba.
The building is austere from the outside, with an elaborately finished main doorway in Neo-Gothic style. The floor plan is rectangular, with three naves, the one in the centre being much wider, while the side naves are covered by galleries which run the length of the church. They are separated by pointed arches, supported by polylobed pilasters, each supporting a sculpture of a saint.
The central nave covered by wooden, Mudejar-style roof, built using the collar beam technique. The coat of arms of the Hermandad de los Gitanos is displayed in the centre.
