Bullring of the Real Maestranza de Caballería in Seville
In Seville, the Bullring of the Real Maestranza de Caballería in Sevilla is considered to be the most important and traditional bullring in Spain, and this is why it is popularly referred to as the "Cathedral of Bullfighting". Built originally from wood (1733) in the mount of Baratillo (which is why it is also known as the “Coso of the Baratillo"), is one of the oldest bullrings in Spain and the first to have a circular (oval) shape.
The tour around the Bullring seats is complemented with the visit to the Exhibition Centre-Museum, in the lower part of the seating area, at the level of rows 10 and 12. It consists of two clearly differentiated sector, the first with a collection of paintings and a selection of bullfighting scenes which belong to the Real Maestranza collection, one of the most important in the world: its first-rate bullfighting art gallery contains a collection of oil paintings from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
The second, older, sector establishes a sequence beginning with the origins of the Real Maestranza. Here there is a space dedicated to the leisure activities of the nobility in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, including a large display cabinet with a varied representation of the servants who worked in the bullring in the eighteenth century: drummers, tendon cutters and lancers. Particularly striking is a silk poster from 1740 and a bullfighting costume donated by His Royal Majesty Prince Carlos de Borbón Dos Sicilias y de Borbón.
The visit continues through the Stables of Lancers Horses to a very spiritual spot, the Bullfighters Chapel, presided by an altarpiece of the Virgin of la Caridad, who is very popular with bullfighters and to whom they have donated many votive offerings.
