Minor Basilica of Santísimo Cristo de la Expiración (Hermandad del Cachorro)
The Minor Basilica of Santísimo Cristo de la Expiración, which stands in the popular Triana Quarter, inn Seville, is the headquarters of the Hermandad del Cachorro, which originated from the primitive Capilla del Patrocinio in the late seventeenth century. The current Basilica has two naves from two clearly differentiated periods.
The 17th century, dedicated to the Virgin of Patrocinio in its dedication of the Glory, is rectangular and a three-section nave, covered with a barrel vault. This is how we enter the temple, and it acts as a Sacramental Chapel. It connects with the new one through an arch protected by an elaborate grille.
Next to it, the new nave, built between 1945 and 1960, has the shape of a Latin cross, 30 metres long and 7.50 metres wide, and a transept of 14 metres. Roofed with barrel vault with rib arches and lunettes, it has a dome with a lantern over the centre of the transept which reminiscent of the local Baroque architecture, contrasting with the rather austere decoration inside the church, which has with a neoclassic air.
The main focal points are the image of the Dying Christ (El Cachorro), created by Francisco Antonio Gijón in 1682 and the Virgin of the Patrocinio (Luis Álvarez Duarte 1973). Visitors will also enjoy the exhibition room/museum which contains all sorts of items and curiosities of this well-known "Hermandad" of Triana.
In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI granted the church of Christ of Cachorro the title and the dignity of Minor Basilica.
