Minor Basilica of Nuestro Padre Jesús del Gran Poder
The current Minor Basilica de Jesús del Gran Poder was built as a site to cater for and host the centuries-old devotion which the town of Seville had professed towards the image of Jesús del Gran Poder, a work by Juan de Mesa dating from 1620, as well as the images of María Santísima del Mayor Dolor y Traspaso and Saint John the Evangelist.
Although the site in the Plaza de San Lorenzo was first established in the 18th Century, the work designed by the Sevillian architects Alberto Balbontín Orta and Antonio Delgado Roig began its construction in 1960. The church, with a historically eclectic style and classical finish, was completed in 1965. Its façade combines Renaissance and Baroque motifs which repeat the same ascending scheme. The door has a broken segmented pediment with the coat of arms; in a second sediment, the belfry, with a similar structure in descending size, with three bells; and in the third, an iron cross. The rest of the façade of the Basilica forms part of the rest of the square, with the construction of the auxiliary buildings of the Brotherhood and the Parish.
The circular interior is preceded by an arcaded atrium with large balconies on the sides, whose access to the nave is via a second entrance at the same level as the exterior. The nave is simple and only consists in elevation of a lofty plinth of red and black marble and the fluted white face, decorated with the fourteen Stations of the Cross. The roof of the Basilica is a small semi-spherical vault decorated with coffers and a central cupola.
The auxiliary rooms around the nave include the Capilla del Sagrario, with a rectangular floor plan and presided by the Holy Virgin, a carved bust of the Lady of the sorrows in the Granada style. The balcony of the choir contains the 1799 organ, one of the oldest in the city. Lastly, the bulk of the artistic treasure of the Brotherhood is in the Calle Hernán Corté, behind the parish church of San Lorenzo. Here visitors can see the two mounted figures, the remains of a trousseau of images and the insignias of the procession of the brotherhood.
