The project for the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium was started in 1937. That year, Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, the club's president, purchased the land on which he planned to build the new Nervión Stadium. The project did not take off until 1954, though. There was a design competition and it was won by Manuel Muñoz Monasterio, the same architect who had just designed the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

This colosseum, perfect for the emerging city of Seville, was a dream come true for Sánchez-Pizjuán. It was his successor, Ramón de Carranza, who undertook to erect the stadium as per the original design, and it would be named after the former president. The foundation stone was laid on 2 December 1956.

The construction of the stadium was completed in the summer of 1958. It was opened on 7 September that same year, with a friendly match between Sevilla and Real Jaén, which ended 3-3. The upper tiers of the grandstands in the shortside and Preferential stands had not been built yet. It was completed in 1974, with Eugenio Montes Cabeza as president, and reached its maximum capacity – 70,000 spectators.

There were more changes after that. The roof and the mosaic on the Preferential stands were built to mark the 1982 World Cup. The stadium's capacity was also reduced to 66,000 spectators. The last modification took place in the 1990s, when all the standing areas had to be removed in order to comply with FIFA regulations. So now the stadium has a capacity of 45,500.

All Sevilla FC's members, fans, supporters and tourists can visit the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium. Visitors can discover its history since it was built in 1958, and where important football matches have been played, such as the 1982 World Cup semi-finals, the 1986 European Cup final, and matches that Sevilla FC has played as part of the Champions League, UEFA, La Liga and King's Cup.
