Declared a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest, Holy Week is the main festivity in Sevilla. It’s a celebration which reaches levels of aesthetic and spiritual intensity that make it unique among all Easter Week celebrations.
From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, confraternities take to the streets to bring the Passion and Death of Christ to life. Their stroll through the city, long rows of penitents, saeta sung at some points of the different routes, footsteps of Christ, spectacular footsteps of the Mystery, and the harmonious footsteps of the Virgin (popularly known as "pasos de palio") carrying the impressive images of great artistic and historic value, comprise an image of incontestable beauty, an impression that is deeply moving and is the devotion of the locals.
Easter Week in Seville is not only a Catholic fiesta going back over four hundred years, but the synthesis of a whole culture centred on sensual pleasure and the essentials of being human. A celebration that is both religious and artistic, serious and joyful, simple and luxurious.
