Corpus Christi is a local holiday in Sevilla and it is dedicated to the sacrament of the Eucharist. There is a procession that departs from the cathedral. For this occasion, the streets along the route are strewn with rosemary and other aromatic herbs. Its most outstanding feature is the monstrance, made by Juan de Arfe in 1578 – a magnificent piece of silverwork.
Several religious floats accompany the monstrance, such as the floats dedicated to Santa Justa y Rufina, San Isidoro, San Leandro, all of which are the work of Duque y Cornejo (18th century); the one dedicated to San Fernando, by Pedro Roldán (17th century); the float to the Immaculate Conception, by Alonso Martínez (17th century) and to the Infant Jesus, by Martínez Montañés (17th century). During the procession and for seven days after it, we can also see one of the oldest and most unusual of the city's traditions: the Seises (ten children) dancing and singing before the Eucharist. There are records of this event taking place as far back as the 15th century.
