Plaza de Santa Cruz is on the site of the old Church of Santa Cruz, situated in the city of Seville. This temple was expropriated and knocked down in 1810 by the French occupation government as part of a plan to redevelop of the city, creating the open space of the current square. The current layout was part of the town planning project by Juan Talavera y Heredia in 1918.

A wrought-iron cross made by Sebastián Conde in 1692 stands in the centre. Until 1840, this cross used to stand where Calle Sierpes and Calle Rioja converge. It is designed as a lamppost from which four snakes emerge, representing Calle Sierpes, its original location, and on their heads there are little angels carrying wrought-iron lanterns.

On the façade of the building on the west side, you can see a tombstone placed by the Academy of Fine Arts in 1858 saying that the remains of the famous Sevillian painter, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, were buried in the former Church of Santa Cruz.
