The Plaza Nueva is in the historical town centre of Seville, and it is both a shopping and administrative centre as the City Hall is located here. It has a perimeter of about 500 metres and occupies about 14,000 m². It was finished in 1853 but it was not inaugurated until 1857.
The square is adorned by a monument to Fernando III of Castile, called "the Saint". A prominent feature is the City Hall, with an 18th-century façade on the east side of the square. It is also worth noting the small Chapel of San Onofre that nestles within the 19th-century buildings. It is all that remains of Convent of San Francisco that is longer there, and the magnificent "Telefónica" building that was the work of Juan Talavera y Heredia.
