Monumento al Rey San Fernando
The monument in honour of King Saint Ferdinand is located in the centre of one of the most important squares in Seville: Plaza Nueva.
The initial idea of a monument to the Holy King came from the mayor Francisco Javier Cavestany in 1848, when the square was still being built, on a plot of land where the Casa Grande de San Francisco Convent used to stand.
The final construction of the monument involved the most important artists at the time. The pedestal and the idea for the monument were designed by Juan Talavera and Heredia. The sides are made up of the figures of four characters who accompanied the Holy King in the conquest of Seville. Alfonso X was made by Enrique Pérez Comendador; Garci Pérez de Vargas was made by Joaquín Sánchez Cid. Ramon Bonifaz was made by José Lafita Díaz. Don Remondo was made by Alfonso López Rodríguez. Crowning the pedestal is the equestrian statue of San Fernando, by Joaquin Bilbao.
It was officially unveiled on 15 August 1924.
The Virgen de los Reyes was brought out in procession to the foot of the monument especially to mark the event .
