The Monument to Juan Sebastián Elcano is located in the Glorieta de los Marineros, where the Paseo de las Delicias meets the Puente de los Remedios Bridge, the Avenida de María Luisa Avenue, and the Avenida Luis Rodríguez Caso.
The monument commemorates the 450th anniversary of the 10th of August 1519 when 250 men set sail from Seville in five ships, the Trinidad, the San Antonio, the Concepción, the Santiago and the Victoria, under the captaincy of Fernando de Magellan with the incredible aim of circumnavigating the world. On the 8th of September 1522 only 18 men returned in a single ship under the captaincy of Juan Sebastián Elcano.
The monument was made by Antonio Cano in 1973. The monument is divided into different parts, a pond with water jets representing the sea and its movements, a mural containing a map of the world and in front of this there is a statue of the conqueror and sailor, at another level there is the death of Magellan, at a fourth level there is the return of the expedition to Seville and a visiting to the old Cathedral of Seville giving thanks for their safe return.
