Las Covachas

Las Covachas are located on Calle Cuesta de Belén, in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, attached to the retaining wall of the Garden or Paseo de Los Limones of the Ducal Palace of Medina Sidonia, Palace of the Guzmanes. They are ten arches that rest on Gothic pilasters, depicting strange mythological sea creatures. Although their function is not clear, their appear to have been part of the old façade of the Palace of Medina Sidonia, called the Puerta de la Mar (Sea Gate).
Las Covachas were commissioned by Enrique de Guzmán, the 2nd Duke of Medina Sidonia, at the end of the 15th century. Declared a historic-artistic monument in 1978 together with the Ducal Palace of Medina Sidonia.
