Church of San Diego
The Franciscanos Descalzos moved into the Chapel of San Blas in 1640, even though the chapel did not meet the requirements to be a home for this community. In front of the Castle of Santiago there was a garden that was later chosen by the Franciscans to build a new convent (1699)
In 1810 the place was occupied by the French who closed the convent and turned it into a penitentiary. It was later returned to the community who used it until it was confiscated in 1835 and as from 1837 it was used as a hospital, called the Hospital de la Misericordia. This is what it has been used as, in one way or another, up to the present day, although the Church of San Diego has been preserved.
