Despite being a small church, the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados is one of the most representative works of the Baroque era in Sanlucar de Barrameda, Cádiz, with a very simple lintelled stone façade.
Due to confrontations with the ecclesiastical authorities of the Iglesia de la Trinidad, where the Brotherhood of Santa Caridad was founded and has lived since 1441, this new hospital-church was moved and built, being consecrated in 1762 as the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados. This church started out under the sponsorship of the Romero Eón del Porte family.
The interior features a Baroque altarpiece by Andrés Marin. It is black and without gilding and presided over by the patron of the temple Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados, an 18th-century image attributed to Ignacio López (disciple of Pedro Roldán). There are further images of great artistic value, like the Nacimiento attributed to the circle of Cristóbal Ramos, the Calvario and the Inmaculada of Genoese origin, and large canvasses attributed to the painter from Sanlúcar, Antonio Borrego del Rosal (18th century).
In 1996 the church was officially listed an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC).
