Estuario del Río Guadiaro
The small natural area of Estuario del Río Guadiaro, to the east of El Estrecho Natural Park and the Bay of Algeciras, occupies the estuary itself and a central island formed by the sediment swept along by the river, in the heart of Sotogrande Costa. As this is currently the only wetlands on the east coast of Cadiz, it is an area with unique geomorphology and wealth of fauna, especially birds. Consequently, its location, which coincides with one of the most important routes for migratory birds, guarantees it is a rather popular place of transit in summer. Up to 140 different species have been observed here.
As such, this place has been declared an Special Protection Area for Birds. Among those that can be seen are the little egret, grey and purple heron, osprey, spoonbill and flamingo. With regards to fish fauna, we must mention the existence of the sea lamprey.
The vegetation present in the area is typical of wetlands, although reeds are predominant. Nevertheless, in non-floodable areas some wild olive trees are interspersed with gorse and bramble bushes.
The natural space includes two routes with walkways that enable you to explore the area: one is on the Paseo del Parque and the other on Calle Jaime el Conquistador, just after the square.
