It is an early fourteenth-century building that was part of a line of mediaeval fortifications in Cadiz on the Atlantic coast that included the Castles of Rota and El Puerto de Santa María. It was declared a Historic Monument in 1931.

Two of its naves currently house part of the treasures of the Municipal Historical Museum. There is a third nave in which temporary exhibitions are held.

The Rooms are arranged chronologically, from the oldest remains to those from the 20th century.

The most outstanding elements include the remains of a tomb known as "The Lovers" or "The Eternal Embrace" as it is the oldest tomb of two people embracing found in the world so far.
