Chirimoya route
The Chirimoya Route is one of the routes along the Salobreña valley, where you can learn about the custard apple tree, its pollination, its properties and culinary applications.
Its flavour, deliciously sweet, tastes similar to pineapple, perhaps strawberry, or maybe even banana; personal and different, it evokes tropical flavours. Native of Central America and Peru, the custard apple is known by many botanists as one of the three best fruits in the world. The naturalist Haenke considered the custard apple as “ Nature's masterpiece”.
Don't miss out on visiting some of the estates that organize tours and fruit and juice tastings. Custard apples are harvested between September and April.
Together with the custard apple, another significant tropical fruit grown in Salobreña are mangoes. Mangoes on the Costa Tropical come into bloom twice. The first flowers of the year are in January, which must be removed, as the optimum blooming temperature isn't reached in this month, meaning that the crop wouldn't be successful. The second and final mango bloom takes place in May, when temperatures are ideal for the success and production of the fruit. It's harvested between September and December.
