The Caracoles de Rus ("Rus Snails") are buildings made of dry stone, which were erected on farmland using stones that were extracted when ploughing up the land. They were used by owners as a shelter, as a surveillance point and as a warehouse. We can find 103 of these structures scattered around the municipality of Rus, in Jaén. The oldest one dates back to 1914.
They have been awarded the Intangible Cultural Heritage status and have become one of the distinguishing features of the town of Rus.
In recent times, work has been done to preserve them and enhance their value. As a result, a network of hiking trails has been created, which takes you past all these structures.
