Vía Verde of Guadiana
The old mining splendour
This route follows the old mining train track that joined the Herrerías Mine and the La Laja Port for almost a century. This route made it possible for places such as the La Isabella Mine to convert Spain into the largest manganese producer in the world at the end of the 19th century, as well as an important international producer of copper and sulphur.
The Vía Verde del Guadiana is well conditioned, even for disabled people, and is especially recommended for hikers and mountain bikers. The route runs between Mediterranean forests and streams that flow to the river.
The Green Route starts in the mining village in the Isabel, in the municipality of The Almond. At Km 7 is the junction with the Camino de los Calizos, near the Sardón Mining Village, with its Station, where the minerals from the nearby wells were weighed and packed, although now all that stands are the ruins of two buildings. Here you can find one of the rest areas located along the route.
Further along the route reaches the Puente del Lobo, a Roman bridge with three semi-circular arches, giving you some beautiful views and a time to rest about 500 m later, in a second rest area. The route continues until the Sardón wind farm.
After crossing two roads, the first parallel to the channel of the Chanza reservoir, and the second, the HV-6400, which joins this point with El Granado, the route passes through a tunnel excavated in the rock. When you come out of the tunnel you will see the Guadiana river and the La Laja Port, the end of the route, with its wharf, for minerals and the last rest area.
