Sierro via Bayarque Trail - PR-A 302
The Sierro via Bayarque Trail - PR-A 302 follows an ancient bridle path which shows the great scenic richness of the area in all of its intensity.
At the start of the path, at a section called Barranco de la Mezquita, you can see —in the midst of the countryside— the richness of the Sierra de los Filabres and the impressive landscape of the Almanzora Valley with its strange desert terrain. The first contact with these mountains shows the variety of indigenous flora and fauna and announces a journey where we are going to recognise the ruins —some almost intact— of civil architecture and traditional farming systems, such as the Pago de Los Puntales.
Through Los Puntales, the trail crosses areas of olive groves and orchards and approaches Bayarque, a village in the Alto Almanzora with architectural features similar to those in Sierro. The town of Bayarque invites you to take your first break and enjoy the unadulterated ways of life in the countryside.
From here on, heading towards Sierro again, the trail is more winding and reveals other features of the route. The next destination is Las Piedras del Hierro, a unique setting accessed by a well-conserved bridle path. At Las Piedras del Hierro, we can see remains of human actions in the transformation of stone for directing water for irrigation.
After passing the previous place, you reach the Sierro River, also called the Boloyunta River, and perspective from there shows the verticality of the place. This is a spectacular stretch which runs as far as one of the most emblematic places in Sierro: La Cuesta Grande, one of the most interesting bridle paths, on account of both its traditional use and its beauty. This leads to the main road to the village of Sierro where the path ends.
