Sierras de Tejeda–Almijara Long-distance Trail - GR 242
The Tejeda-Almijara Long-Distance Mountain Trail - GR 242 is the main axis of the signposted paths in Axarquía in the province of Malaga. From its start in Periana to its finish next to the Cuevas de Nerja, it comes down from the mountains to the sea, passing along the way through the prettiest and most representative places of this beautiful region, bordering the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park.
It has been designed to make it accessible to any hiker, using the traditional paths and passing through all the villages so the traditional architecture of Axarquía, the typical regional gastronomy, and friendliness, hospitality and generosity of its people can be enjoyed by all. Walkers can stay in any of the many hotels, hostels or country houses along the route.
This trail will allow us enjoy not only the spectacular wild nature of the Sierras de Tejeda y Almijara but also other cultural, historical and social attractions. As regards culture, we can enjoy the many shrines such as the Santo Cristo Shrine in Alcaucín, Santa Ana in Canillas de Albaida and San Antonio in Cómpeta.
With regard to history, the path crosses areas of great importance, such as Castillo de Zalia, and we can also see some of the many bridges that the different cultures that have moulded these lands have left us, such as the Roman bridges in Sedella and Canillas de Albaida and the Arabian bridge in Salares.
