Cortegana - El Hurón - Aroche - PR-A 1 Trail
The Cortegana - El Hurón-Aroche - PR-A 1 Trail was the first to be approved in all of Andalusia. Along this route, you will have the chance to discover La Dehesa (meadows and pastureland), the most representative ecosystem of the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche mountains, as well as traditional architecture in the enchanting village of El Hurón.
The route starts in the highest part of Cortegana, near the chapel called Ermita del Calvario. This first section is known as Camino de Ojalvos, and the path's traditional stone paving is well preserved. We walk down to the bridge that crosses a stream called Arroyo de los Andrinos. From this point, we proceed along a wide track leading to farmhouses and meadows between Cortegana and Aroche, and we must be careful in case any vehicles come along.
The track soon becomes a firm dirt path. This path runs all the way to Aroche, but the trail leaves it, to the left, after about four and a half kilometres, continuing down alongside by La Peñita ravine. We take the path of the old village of El Hurón.
On this public path there are several iron gates that we must leave closed after passing through, until reaching the banks of Alcalaboza. After crossing the stream, the path leaves the ravine, running through open countryside and along the old Aroche-Almonaster la Real cattle trail, which still has the original cobbled surface, until we reach the abandoned village of El Hurón.
It then carries on towards El Vinculo and Cerro Borrero, entering Aroche via the so-called Alto de los Méndez.
