Alto Guadiato Coalfields

The Alto Guadiato Coalfield is bordered by the Los Pedroches Valley to the east and the province of Badajoz to the west, and is a territory dedicated to mining.

The presence of this activity is revealed not only in the landscape but also in the socio-economic transformations that have contributed to the rise of a particular form of conviviality and cultural specifics for the work and ways of life that reflect the importance that this activity has had in our community. Within this context, the Alto Guadiato Coalfield acquires special pre-eminence.

The Cordoba towns of Bélmez and Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo reveal the relationship and transcendence that mining has had in these lands as both their splendour and their decline have run parallel to this activity, from which there are ruins dating back 4,300 years.
