Biography
Ramón Montoya Salazar was born in Madrid in 1880 and died there in 1949 He is considered the first great flamenco guitarist in history He was a gypsy, son of cattle farmers, who was already famous when he was twenty because he played at cafés in Madrid However, he became better known when he joined Antonio Chacón, with whom he played for many years
However, Montoya was criticised a lot by contemporary artists because he was overly elaborated and some even left him on his own on stage so that he could stand out He created rondeñas by tuning the bass string in D and the third string in F sharp He also transported tarantas to G sharp to structure the playing for mineras, because the singers' tessitura for this style required a new tonality
