The “Morisco” (Moorish-Christian converts of the 15/16th centuries) Games in Purchena were only rediscovered a few years ago, recovering part of the town’s history. They are now an original sporting event, unique in Andalusia and have been officially declared a Festival of Tourist Interest by the Regional Government of Andalusia.
The "Morisco" Games in Aben Humeya are held every year in August. They have become an established cultural event, respectful of their Moorish origins, traditional, characteristic of popular folklore and a real tourist attraction.
The games involve a number of disciplines for which participants can register on the official website for the event. Wrestling, archery, weightlifting, triple jump, sprints, dance and singing are some of the activities included. The sports events tend to be demonstrations of strength, skill or precision, while the musical activities are based on originality of costume and choreography.
At the bandstand in the square, the winners of each event receive a cash prize in coins, presented in a moneybag, along with a diploma and a laurel crown.
The attractions at this unusual celebration include the Souk, which is designated the Official Fair. At the event site at 7pm visitors can sample all kinds of traditionally produced foods inspired in Moroccan cuisine, and there are also fabrics, ceramics and wooden crafts on sale.
The little ones can take part in workshops like belly dancing, or they can attend the “Morisco” Games school and become one of the young athletes.
