Puerto Real Spring Fair

Without detracting from other celebrations, the Fair can be considered the quintessential festival in Puerto Real. This is due to its acceptance by the citizens, since it has been held without interruption since 1843 when it started out as a Livestock Fair.
This early date makes it one of the oldest Fairs in Spain, even more than in towns such as Jerez, Seville and Cordoba.
The fair centres on the “Las Canteras” Enclosure, a real luxury for the both the town's population and for visitors, since unlike anywhere else, they enjoy a fair under the shelter of the age-old pine trees in the nearby park, the true green lung of the Bay of Cadiz.
Since it has always been held at the end of May or beginning of June, it avoids both the inclement weather during the months of April and May and the severity of high summer.
The outstanding feature of the fair are the marquees installed by companies, associations and local groups, since they are fundamentally different from other fairs in the area: First of all, the fact that all open to the public and none of them are strictly private; and then there is the size: they are large marquees where people can chat, dance and enjoy the company of hundreds of people.
As in all fairs, there has to be a Fun Fair offering the latest attractions for the young as well as the not so young, who will enjoy the popular rides in an enclosure which has recently been renovated and updated with all kinds infrastructure.
