Carnival in Puerto Real

Carnival in Puerto Real is a coastal carnival, therefore its predominant features are the joy and musicality in its expressions. Like Carnival in Cádiz and other places in the Bay of Cadiz, highlights include carnival groups that make these festivities an act of free, light-hearted expression, compiling the events of the last year in humorous and critical ways.

Of all the festivals that Puerto Real hosts, Carnival is definitely the one that enjoys the highest levels of local participation, with it being the locals who, through institutions and associations, organise much of the events included in the Official Programme of Activities. Asociación de Amigos del Carnaval "Alfonso Hoyos" is of special significance, as it attracts the majority of Carnival groups and enthusiasts, while veteran associations such as Peñas Carnavalescas "El Tango" and "Hay Moros en la Costa", play important roles too.

Although the main events of Carnival in Puerto Real are El Pregón, the Costume Competition and the Humour Parade - perhaps due to their transcendence and elaborate organisation - all the events and competitions organised by local companies are just as important, the majority of which have a distinctive local gastronomic character and which gather hundreds of people around the event's star attraction: the musical groups.
