History
We can trace back the origin of the city to the first century B.C., with the construction of a bridge (the Old Bridge) as a part of the Roman road which linked the Guadalquivir valley with Cartago Nova (nowadays Cartagena). The existence of a mill next to the bridge played an important role in the foundation of the village. In the first part of the 20th century, the village grew very quickly thanks to the impulse given by mine working, now abandoned. It was an important crossroads in the trade between the Levant and Andalusia; even a railroad was built, but today is also abandoned.
It has been an independent village, with its own Town Hall, since 1933.
