Arch of Saint Bernard
The Arch of Saint Bernard dates from the second half of the 15th century and is not gateway in the walls surrounding the medieval town but the entrance to a flour mill.
It adopts the form of a barrel-vaulted passageway surmounted by a blind pointed arch with projecting springers. It is mainly built out of blocks of travertine stone, with the natural geological substrate reused here and there.
The Arch of Saint Bernard has enormous historical value because it is the only example of late medieval monumental civic architecture that has been preserved in the town centre. Here begins a pedestrian route that runs along Bajo Adarve and culminates at Puerta del Sol, in the Villa neighbourhood.
